Founded in 1936, the American Society of Appraisers (ASA) is the oldest and only major organization exclusively dedicated to serving appraisal professionals. ASA’s membership includes appraisal specialists in all types of property - valuing businesses, machinery and equipment, real property, personal property, and gems and jewelry (selectable). To earn the ASA designation, members go through a rigorous testing, training and evaluation process.
ASA members are involved in matters such as the taxes you pay on your home, the value of property for insurance purposes, working with banks to determine the advisability of bank loans, prices paid for homes and businesses, determining the value of property at the time it is donated, etc. ASA members must constantly update their extensive knowledge in the disciplines noted below.
Appraisal Disciplines ($50/M extra):
Business Valuation: Members who value businesses of all sizes, from small proprietorships to large multinational corporations. They also value patents, trademarks, employment agreements, copyrights, securities and goodwill along with preparing merger and acquisition studies, employee stock ownership plan valuations and other similar financial studies.
Machinery and Technical Specialties: Members who perform market or liquidation value appraisals for various purposes (sales, acquisition, ad valorem taxes, eminent domain, etc.). General machinery and equipment or specialties include Agricultural Chattels, Aircraft, Computers and High-Tech Personal Property, Cost Surveys, Industrials, Machinery and Equipment (M&E), Oil & Gas, and Public Utilities.
Real Property: Members who value all types of real estate, whether commercial (office buildings, free-standing retail, shopping centers); institutional (hospitals, schools, courthouses); industrial (manufacturing plants, warehouses); special purpose (recording studios, churches, radio/TV stations, country clubs); and residential (apartment houses, single-family homes, townhouses, duplexes, condominiums).
Personal Property: Members who produce appraisals for specific purposes (insurance, estate tax, damage claims, donation, etc.) for property that includes Antiques and Decorative Art, Fine Arts, Collectibles, etc.
Gems and Jewelry: Members performing appraisals for all types of gemstones and jewelry.
